We offer the sorbet by the scoop in a cup or cone~

Q is for Quaint!

With all of the events we are lucky enough to be able to help with, we love it when we find a quaint little B&B or barn somewhere in the country
.....somewhat hidden from the hustle and bustle of life.

"Q" is for QUAINT!

THE BURKE MANOR INN
Just down Wendover East, there is a cute little B&B called Burke Manor Inn.  They have a great tent out back for the perfect space for a reception or party regardless of the weather and old-fashioned quarters for guests to stay.  There is a pool on the property for a nice dip, too!

FEARRINGTON BARN
Fearrington Village is near and dear to Robin's heart and the barn on the property there is one of my favorite rustic venues.  Fearrington is a great place to plan for a day out and about, and their barn is one of the most magical places that you can imagine.  They have a lighted entrance for guests to go through and the inside of the barn is lit so beautifully!  Fearrington House is located just down I-40/I-85 in Pittsboro.

THE GROOME INN
On the outskirts of Greensboro, there is The Groome Inn which is a nice location to have a wedding outback and the reception on the same grounds.....lots of room to roam!  It has a southern flair that is hard to find and the kitchen is breath-taking.  If you have a wedding or party in your future...be sure to check it out.

WALNUT LANE BED & BREAKFAST
Tucked in the middle of the woods in Pleasant Garden is a cozy B&B that lends the perfect setting for a more intimate wedding.  There is a magnificent archway that blooms vibrant yellow Jasmine and creates an amazing backdrop for a wedding ceremony.  There is a screened in porch, a dance floor covered by a tent and lots of nature!

HODGIN VALLEY FARM
Also in Pleasant Garden is Hodgin Valley Farm.  This property has a great lakeside terrace, a barn for parties, a house for the wedding party to stay and lots of farm to create the right country setting.  Hodgin Valley Farm has horses, guineas, goats, ducks, cats and lots of other wildlife to keep things interesting while you are there.  There is a cut covered bridge over the lake and rocking chairs on every porch you find.

Sometimes there is nothing better than a little bit of country.....

P is for Proximity Hotel!

With the wedding season getting cranked up, we are getting really excited to visit some of our favorite venues in town.  It never fails that when weddings are in full swing, we are at Proximity Hotel at least once a weekend for an event.

"P" is for PROXIMITY HOTEL!

Proximity Hotel is one of our faves because it has a look that you just don't find anywhere else in the Triad.  Amanda Martin is our right arm there are the hotel and she does an amazing job helping all of our brides coordinate their special day.  Ceremonies take place on site in the Social Lobby and the guests migrate to the reception room directly after without having to travel to a different location.

The Weaver Room is my top choice because you are able to get a very unique setup with square tables, and the view is out of this world as the sun begins to set!   A fun feature for the weddings and hotel guests there is their vintage car, CHECKER!
It will run you around town in style~

If you want to just get a night out for dinner, Printworks Bistro has an wonderful menu and is a great place for a mommy & daddy date night.....rehearsal dinner.....bridal luncheon......birthday......or just a lunch with friends.

If you haven't been able to visit Proximity to see it all for yourself, think about taking a break one weekend and stay in one of their great rooms for a break while you are still at home....they have a great pool to relax by!

O is for Organic!

We take great pride in our cakes, cookies, brownies.....well, all that we do here at Maxie B's!   Our desserts are made using the freshest ingredients, with many of the items coming from local sources.  In addition to supporting local businesses, we also like to use organic ingredients as much as possible.

"O" is for Organic!

Our coffee, our strawberries (from Faucette Farms), our carrots and our milk are just some of the things we do organic.......

N is for The Nut House!

If you have ever had our Hummingbird Cake, a piece of Seafoam Candy, a slice of our Pecan Pie or a topping of chopped pecans on your frozen yogurt....you have had pecans fresh from the tree!  We purchase our pecans from a farm in Eastern North Carolina~

"N" is for The Nut House!

The Nut House is in Roseboro, NC and their crop is fresh water irrigated.  Elbie is your go-to-fellow there and is happy to get some fresh pecans in your hands.  You can order from them online or give him or his wife, Becky, a call to place an order.  They sell Pecan Halves which are scrumptious, Chocolate Covered Pecan Halves, Crunchy Sugar Cinnamon Pecans as well as In-Shell Pecans.

M is for Maxine!

It is no secret that Maxie B's has a mascot.....a pug!  The bakery name was inspired by the names of two pugs that Robin and Lewis had as part of their family a while ago...Max & Bitterman.  They have since passed, but the name still lives on.

As the year was kicked off, there was a need for a new face to carry on the look and the attitude needed to succeed....in comes Maxine!

"M" is for Maxine!

Maxine is a pug who knows what she wants and knows how to get it.  She is one of the sweetest girls around and you will fall in love with her when you meet her.  Here are some photos of Maxine doing what she does best.....hanging out with the family on Bald Head Island!

L is for Lemon Curd Cupcakes!

Lemon.....such a palette cleansing flavor.  Fresh squeezed lemonade, Lemon Bars, Lemon Cream Pie......and LEMON CURD CUPCAKES!!

"L" is for Lemon Curd Cupcakes!

When you take a bite into these delicious cupcakes, you get a rush of lemon zest....cool whipped topping.....cream cheese cupcakes....and a mouthful of YUMMY GOODNESS!

The smell alone of freshly baked cupcakes is divine, but then add to that a stove-top cooked curd, a homemade whipped topping like nothing else you have ever eaten...

...and top it all off with a bit of zest...

...and you get an oozing pot of perfection!

Come by the shop and grab a few for yourself~

K is for Keylime Pie!

Okay....so I got a little off schedule with the A to Z blogs, but there is no better way to come back with a vengeance than with our Key Lime Pie!

"K" is for Key Lime Pie!

There is nothing more relaxing on a hot, Summer day than a fresh slice of Key Lime Pie.  We bake our Key Lime Pie in house; it is made with a graham cracker crust, tart key lime curd and topped it with fresh whipped cream....and lime, too!

We have this out daily for slices...and you can always order a whole pie for your cookout!

J is for Jackson's Dairy!

As you now know, our main product was yogurt when the business first began in 1985.  Though the name of the shop, the look of the cafe and the options for dessert have changed....we do still carry frozen yogurt.  We have our yogurt brought in each week from a dairy in Dunn, NC.....Jackson's Dairy Farm!

"J" is for Jackson's Dairy!

Jackson's Dairy feeds its cows grain from naturally fertilized fields, and they do not give them any hormones.  The Jackson family has farmed the land there at the farm since 1806......and offers a large range of products from milk to free range eggs and ice cream.

We get our vanilla frozen yogurt delivered in from them and from that base flavor, we create all of our tasty flavors like Strawberry, Lemon Poppyseed, Keylime Pie and more.  You can definitely taste the difference of a true, homemade product!

Come in and try on our treats made with Jackson's Dairy yogurt.......Sundae, Cone, Cup, Brownie Sundae, Shake....mmm!

I is for I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!

Remember when?????
circa 1988, Battleground Ave., Greensboro...the same spot we are in now!

In case you don't know the whole story behind Maxie B's...here we go!

We began as an I Can't Believe It's Yogurt franchise store back in August of 1985 over on West Market Street.  I had come up with the idea of opening a frozen yogurt shop while I was studying at UNC-CH, and spent the summer after graduation building our first shop.  We then opened a second location in Greensboro about 2 1/2 years later (the same location on Battleground that we are still in!).  Over the years, I continued to notice how many people struggled to remember our name...it was soooooo long!  It became apparent that if folks did not know our name after 16 years....they probably were not going to ever know it.  So...my husband thought of a really cute and personal name for the shops....Maxie B's, after our first two pugs, Max and Bitterman!  I loved it!  We then set about dreaming of all the things we could sell under the name Maxie B's...not just frozen yogurt!  Well....it just so happened that I was pregnant with our son at the time and was craving chocolate cake.  I began baking at home...and the rest is now as you see us today.  Cake, cake, and more cake!  We love that people responded to the new name, the baked-from-scratch cakes from old, Southern recipes, and our continued efforts to keep a small business afloat through the years.

We still sell frozen yogurt, now made from a local dairy in Spivey's Corner.  We still make frozen yogurt or ice cream cakes on special request for customers who remember them from back when!  And I even still get Christsmas cards from Julie Brice, the woman who started the I Can't Believe It's Yogurt franchise out of Dallas, TX as a college student at SMU herself.  She sold the company several years back and is a proud Mom of two handsome boys and wife to a fun-loving hubby...(who is also a great golfer...he played the GGO in the early 90's!)  She taught me so much and inspired me to work as hard as I could to create success.  We have not seen each other in many years now, but as I left the franchise, she wished me well, and I know she still does.  Perhaps we should ship her family a cake!

H is for Homeland Creamery!

As Summer approaches, it will soon be the peak season for ice cream.  We have lots of options in our shop for you to pick from.....but one of the best things we have to offer is our Homeland Creamery Ice Cream!

"H" is for Homeland Creamery!

As of last Summer, we are happy to serve fresh, homemade ice cream from the Homeland Creamery Dairy in Julian, NC.  The Bowman's are in their sixth generation to operate the dairy on the family homestead since the 1930's.

In addition to their tasty ice creams, they also sell a variety of milks, buttermilk, butter,  eggnog and beef.  Homeland Creamery Dairy has about 200 cows that keep up with the needs to produce it all on a daily basis.  The cows are fed hay, grains and feed grown right on their farmland, which means the cows are free from hormones and antibiotics.

The creamery is located at 6506 Bowman Rd, Julian, NC and is open Monday through Friday from 9a to 6p and on Sundays from 1p to 6p.  You can arrange a tour of the dairy by reservation.  As Summer creeps up on us, the creamery is sure to be very busy.....as will we with lots of cones Homeland Creamery ice cream scooped daily!

G is for Gluten-Free!

With so many requests this year for Gluten-Free desserts, we have added a daily Gluten-Free item to our bakery case.  Whether it is a Raspberry Lady Cake, a Classic Vanilla Cupcake or a Devil's Food Cake.....we aim to please!

"G" is for GLUTEN-FREE!

This weekend we are featuring our Vanilla and Chocolate Gluten-Free cupcakes iced in a Buttercream Frosting. You can get one or a dozen, so come on by the bakery and take your pick!

You can always place a custom order for a birthday, wedding or anniversary...just give us several days notice.  See you soon~

F is for Faucette Farm!

It is no secret, Maxie B's is known in the Triad for our Fresh Strawberry Buttercream Cake!

We sell an insane amount of slices of this cake in the bakery and that would not be possible without a large supply of fresh strawberries for us to wash, slice and fill cakes with each day.  When strawberries are in season here in NC (soon!!!) we have our certified organic strawberries brought in a couple of times a week right off of the fields of
Faucette Farm in Brown Summit.

"F" is for FAUCETTE FARM!

Tyler Faucette loads up his truck, heads on over to see us and unloads them right into our cooler.  They don't hang around the shop very long at all, because we stuff lots of fresh sliced strawberries between three layers of Cream Cheese Poundcake....ice it in our homemade Buttercream icing and we are good to go!  If you have not had a slice of our Fresh Strawberry Buttercream cake....you have to drop what you are doing and come to the shop IMMEDIATELY!   Along with our Strawberry Buttercream, we are also featuring our Strawberry Shortcake which is filled with the same berries......but topped with a light, homemade whipped cream!  DELISH~

You can visit Faucette Farm at 7566 Friendship Church Rd, Brown Summit, NC 27214.  They are open M-F from 8a to 6p and on Saturdays from 8a to 3p.  They also have tables setup at the Greensboro Downtown Curb Market on Saturdays.

Faucette Farm has been growing certified organic vegetables along with their strawberries for about 4 years now.  Veggies include collards, sweet potatoes, beans, potatoes, corn, cucumbers, squash, lettuce, okra, watermelon, cantaloupes, herbs and more.  They recently added some heritage breed turkeys and will have those available come Fall.

E is for Eggs!

You either love them or you hate them, but if you love them.....you love them when they are fresh off the farm!

"E" is for EGGS!

We take great pride in being able to use as fresh of an ingredient as possible in our cakes and sweet goodies.  Our eggs are local, free-range and farm fresh from right down the road in McLeansville, NC.

Ward's is a farm that provides our eggs each week with delivery straight from their farm to our bakery.  We go through approximately 200 dozen eggs in a normal week.....whew!  Daily you will see bowls full of eggs with a dollop of vanilla to make a true Southern treat.

The great thing about them being local and one on one with us for deliveries is that they reuse all of the packaging to eliminate waste...boxes, cardboard shelving and all; we hold it for them to pick up each week.

If you want to get a dozen or two for yourself, be sure to visit Ward's at the Greensboro Downtown Farmer's Curb Market on Saturdays from 6a to 12p.  They have their farm fresh eggs available as well as pork.

D is for Devil's Food Cake!

So.....cake, cake and more cake!  We love sweets here at Maxie B's and it all started with a simple chocolate craving during a pregnancy.

If you don't already know, Robin is a chocoholic.  With that said, it only makes sense that when she was pregnant with Jaxon she wanted a really good chocolate cake to soothe that sweet tooth.  Through lots of searching and no success, she decided she would make her own....an old fashioned, Southern style chocolate cake like your grandma would bake.

At that time, the shop was a franchise of I Can't Believe It's Yogurt and there was not a slice of cake to be found in our shop.  Long story short, Robin baked a great chocolate cake in her kitchen at home, Lewis wanted it out of the house, she brought it to the shop, our customers wanted it and.......that was the birth of the bakery and Devil's Food Cake!

"D" is for Devil's Food Cake!

If you have a sweet tooth, you MUST try this cake.  It will require that you have a 1/2 gallon of milk to wash it all down, but it is absolutely amazing and scrumptious!  We have our Devil's Food Cake in daily either by the slice or in a 9" round cake that you can take home to nibble on after dinner (or for breakfast if you want!).

ENJOY!

C is for Coffee!

We get lots of compliments and questions about the coffee we brew & serve daily.  You all have really enjoyed the flavor, the freshness and the quality.....so let us share with you where it comes from.

"C" is for Coffee!

Coffee is a great thing to have on a rainy day, on a cool spring morning.....or any day with a slice of our homemade cake.  We order our beans from Dean's Beans in Orange, MA.  Dean's Beans has something special.....their beans are all 100% organic, fair trade and kosher.

Our regular coffee is a Marakesh Express while our decaf is a Peruvian Blend.  They ship beans to us often and the aroma of a box being shipped in is absolutely amazing.  Even if you were not wanting a cup of coffee, as soon as the box arrives you immediately grab a cup to indulge.

Dean's Beans roasts their beans in small batches at their beanery in MA.  They only purchase shade grown which supports healthy environments for growers and protects critical migratory bird habitat.    They sponsor projects in the US with disenfranchised communities such as Native Americans, the homeless and disabled, and many other groups trying to improve their lives and that of their communities.

Come in and grab a cup of Dean's Beans roasts.....we have them in all day, every day!
