Wedding Wednesday: Wil and Sadie

Wil and Sadie met at a High Point Young Professionals networking event in October of 2011. At the time Wil was working for the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and Sadie was a professor at High Point University. They were both new to town and each decided to attend that evening with friends. Towards the end of the night Wil came over to the table Sadie was sitting at to introduce himself and asked her to attend a show with him in Winston-Salem. Sadie took him up on his offer and the couple has been together ever since!

Wil’s proposal came as quite a surprise. The couple was preparing to travel to Monteagle, Tennessee to spend the Christmas holiday with Wil’s family when at the last minute he insisted that they make one last stop in Greensboro before hitting the road. Oddly, Wil ended up driving them to the airport and out on the tarmac to a private jet. As a Christmas surprise he had arranged for them to fly to Tennessee! Once in the air the pilot closed the door between them and before Sadie realized what was happening Wil was down on one knee to propose. They spent the rest of the flight celebrating with champagne and planning for their upcoming wedding! His family was in on the secret and greeted the couple as they arrived in Monteagle with Sadie’s ring.

Wil and Sadie were married on August 3rd, 2013 at the High Point Country Club in High Point, NC. It was a beautiful evening ceremony honoring both of their faiths, drawing from both Jewish and Christian traditions. They were married under a beautiful floral chuppa that was later placed over the cake table.

The theme for their celebration centered around a traditional, sophisticated, and elegant feel. Both the ceremony and reception room were decorated with deep purple flowers, crisp white linens, and gold chiavari chairs. They danced the night away to a wonderful 12-piece band playing Motown and Beach music. They had a beautiful four-tier wedding cake of Birthday Cake and My Favorite Pound (light lemon). The cake was decorated with buttercream prints of paisley, dots, soft shell lines, and lovely scrollwork. Accented with deep purple flowers and topped with an elegant monogram.

Sadie joked that she knew they would be having a Maxie B’s wedding cake before she even knew where they would get married! She called the shop a week after their engagement to book the date and place a deposit. Oh boy, were we flattered! It was such an honor to be a part of such a special day in Wil and Sadie’s life.

Wedding Wednesday: Jen & David

David and Jen met in 2009 while attending East Carolina University. During a group assignment for class, a friend of David’s was in a small group with Jen. Since she knew David was interested in Jen, she invited her to lunch one day knowing David would be there as well. The couple hit it off at lunch and David asked Jen on a date for the upcoming weekend, which happened to be Valentine’s Day! The couple has been together ever since.

During a long weekend in Savannah, GA, David surprised Jen with a new Nikon camera. While the couple was out admiring the town and taking photographs, David hid an engagement ring in Jen’s camera bag. David insisted that Jen switch lenses while they were in Forsyth Park knowing that Jen would find the ring underneath!

Their reception took place in the Verellen showroom in High Point, NC. Jen is a designer for the company and knew the showroom would fit perfectly with the theme for their wedding. She’s crazy about anything vintage and antique. Burlap, galvanized lanterns, mason jars, and old springs created a wonderful laid back, southern, vintage feel. Their galvanized metal cake stand was out of this world beautiful! When Jen’s mom dropped it off in the shop prior to the wedding, mass amounts of swooning took place! Their wonderful vintage feel transferred beautifully to their three tier cake. Simple whipped frosting adorned with soft purple and white flowers and finished off with wooden bird toppers created the perfect touch.

Wedding Wednesday

The fact that Sarah and Scott Foster both made the decision to attend North Carolina State University is a decision I’m sure the couple will never regret, and that doesn’t even factor in the academic benefits. We’re speaking more on the grounds of growth, love, coincidence (read: fate), and friendship.

Sarah and Scott met freshman year of college through pure happenstance. Sarah’s roommate happened to know a few fellow classmates from high school who were also attending NCSU at the time. Well, one of those friends just so happened to be Scott. The two were introduced and well, as Sarah puts it, the rest was history!

Part of that history involves a cold January weekend when the couple took a trip to the mountains of Georgia. It was just as lovely as one could imagine. A cabin overlooking the river, hiking routes planned, and a trip to the beautiful Amicalola falls. Just as the couple made their way in front of the falls, Scott got down on one knee and proposed! As I’m sure you figured out, Sarah said yes.

Sarah spoke of her cake tasting with Shannon Barbee as one of the beginning components that got her and Scott excited about planning their wedding. After Sarah fell in love with the cake we created for her sister’s wedding she said she knew she couldn’t go wrong with our bakery. The couple was married on September 14th, 2013 at Poplar Springs Church of Christ in King, NC followed by a reception at the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem, NC. It was a beautiful celebration with a wonderful Old Hollywood (Audrey Hepburn) theme.  For their special day, they chose Birthday Cake, Fresh Strawberry Buttercream, and Fresh Apple for their gorgeous three-tier cake.  To go along with their Old Hollywood theme, the couple decided to garnish the cake with beautiful white roses and a lovely crystal topper.

We’re so thankful to have been included in such a special day for a truly wonderful couple!

Wedding Wednesday

When Jessica and Dave were introduced in February 2010 through mutual friends, the couple shared an immediate connection. Jessica recalls telling her close friends and family that she knew Dave was “the one” as soon as they met.

Well, Jessica was right. The couple began dating shortly after they were introduced in February 2010, and announced their engagement in November 2011.

Jessica adores her job as an educator and has a very special connection with her students and classroom.  Knowing this, Dave decided it would be the perfect place to catch her off guard and propose.  Everything was set up perfectly. Principle notified, kids prepared to join in, fellow colleagues ready to participate. He even had someone ready to catch the moment on film!

To top off the afternoon, Dave had arranged for Jessica to have the rest of the day off so they could enjoy lunch at their favorite restaurant in Charlotte, NC, 300 East. The evening wrapped up with a surprise dinner party at Dandelion Market surrounded by their closest friends. Essentially, it was the proposal of a lifetime.

Jessica and Dave were married on April 27th, 2013 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC.  When we asked Jessica why her and Dave chose Maxie B’s for their wedding cake, she brought up memories of the wedding cake we made for her sister in 2006. She said she has always been impressed with our bakery and that her love for our Fresh Strawberry Buttercream made it an easy choice!  The couple cited their tasting appointment with our Event Coordinator, Shannon, as one of their favorite memories in the bakery. They loved the experience of being together as a family to share in the decisions about the cake and being able to taste so many wonderful flavors.

For their special day, the couple chose Fresh Strawberry Buttercream, Raspberry Lady, Hummingbird (sweet banana bread), and Oreo for their beautiful four-tiered wedding cake. Shannon helped the couple bring to life their perfect wedding cake designed around their modern theme with a classically southern twist.  White, silver, gray, and blush pink accents were perfectly worked into the entire day.  The cascading peonies on the cake were absolutely breathtaking! To make the day even more special for their guests, the couple named each table after a special event in their lives.

Jessica and Dave Williams had an amazing day surrounded by friends and family that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. We’re so happy we were able to be a part of it, too!

Wedding Wednesday

Weddings here in the bakery are very near and dear to our hearts. Being a part of such a wonderful celebration in someone’s life is a true honor. To showcase this opportunity, we are happy to introduce our newest blog feature, Wedding Wednesdays! Each Wednesday we will showcase some of the many wonderful couples we have been lucky enough to meet. To kickoff this new feature, we are proud to introduce you to Craig and Katie Williamson!
Craig and Katie met in 2003 during their freshman year of college at The University of North Carolina Greensboro. They both participated in Greek life and were introduced through mutual friends. After college, four and a half years of friendship, and four years of dating, Craig proposed during a Saturday night out in downtown Greensboro just outside of Grey’s Tavern. The couple then celebrated with an engagement party inside Grey’s surrounded by friends and family who witnessed the proposal from the tavern’s front windows!
Craig and Katie were married on October 6th, 2012 at The Angel’s Cottage On The Lake in Thomasville, NC. When we asked Katie why she and Craig chose Maxie B’s for their wedding cake, she spoke of her time working in our bakery during college, and the many occasions she and Craig spent in and out of the shop over the years. They also spoke of our dedication to using the freshest ingredients, baking everything from scratch with love, and the wonderful generosity and fun spirit of our shop Owner, Robin, and Event Coordinator, Shannon. Of course, their love for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip, German Chocolate, and 18 Carrot Cake also helped!

Our team of decorators created a wonderful cake for the couple designed around their rustic, vintage, and storybook inspired wedding. The couple chose our popular crowd pleasers Orange Dreamsicle and Five Flavor Pound (classic pound cake flavored with lemon, almond, rum, brandy and vanilla) for their special day. We are so grateful to have been involved in such a big day for Katie and Craig!
