They don't make them like they used to....

A fun way to customize your wedding cake is to bring in a personalized topper.  It is not always the case that a wedding cake topper is used on the cake, but the toppers being used today are more fun....and very different that what your parents used.

Here are a few toppers that caught my eye...       (FYI, Etsy.com is a great site to search)

The bride and groom topper has definitely changed over the years.  These wooden "peg" toppers are very fun and the best part is that you can have them customized to look just like you and your man!

Birds are making their way into weddings for this Spring and Summer.  This cute little couple would be the perfect finish to any vintage cake!

I LOVE OWLS!!!  These clay pieces are a just cute and I think they would be a great gift for another owl lover!

A non-traditional accent for the cake are these custom paper banner and bride/groom cutouts.

Monograms are the most popular topper used in our bakery.  We like to see unique ways to personalize the cake, and these moss covered toppers are a great way to do that!

Vintage Appeal

I have seen many brides over the last two years who were planning a vintage inspired wedding.  There is no doubt that the vintage look is very popular, so we wanted to share a few ideas of cakes that keep it vintage glam...but also highlight a few designs that allow more color and whimsy to be a part of your big day.

An intricate piped detail on the cake will really keep things formal, while pulling in a traditional feel with a champagne tone and monogram spices things up a bit!

Floral and lace are two ways to coordinate the cake with linens and fresh floral centerpieces.  Keeping to muted tones is the way to make it all work seamlessly.

Ribbon sashes and brooches are chic.  With a subtle detail, a lace applique in this case, the cake will be dressed up elegantly.  Vintage brooches can be found on line, but also consider using pieces that have been passed in your family for a more personal touch.

You can't go wrong with pearls!  A classic look, yet simple....with a "less is more" approach.

The wedding dress could also be an inspiration for design.  Using elements such as stones, pearls, floral accents and buttons help create a theme for the day.

Color is never a bad thing; it brings a bit of fun into the mix.  A washed out shade is a great way to make things more playful....and custom!

Satellite cakes on vintage stands are also a way to create a unique presentation for your guests.  Working in a topper that was used by your parents, or even grandparents, would be a nice finishing touch.

A cake says it all...

We are so honored to be able to play a role in the celebrations that all of our customers have each and every day.  A custom cake for a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, a new job, a new house, an engagement, a baby on the way.....no matter what it is for, we are there through our cakes!

Yesterday we were able to make a Rapunzel cake for Anna-Kaye's birthday and this picture says it all.  She was so excited and left without words when she saw her birthday cake.  When a child is brought to tears with their birthday cake, we know we did our job!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANNA-KAYE!

I was browsing for a little Valentine's inspiration this afternoon and came across a really fun & romantic Valentine's shoot.

The site that featured this was Somewhere Splendid, telling about a blog, Ruffled....I just couldn't resist sharing.  Take a peek at the cute couple and a playful cake!

Plan ahead~

2012 has already proven to big a busy and eventful one for us here are Maxie B's!  Over the decade, we have happily been able to fulfill almost all cake requests from our customers…from birthdays to weddings, regardless of the amount of notice we had to work on the cake.  As our business has grown, we are realizing that we do have some limitations as far as how many cakes can can make for the week…both from a space perspective in our shop and as far as how many cakes our girls can bake and decorate.  As a result, we are seeing dates book up often and quickly, especially for holidays and popular wedding weekends.  We also need to have a week’s notice for custom decorated cakes.

Ideally, a one week to 10 day advance notice on all custom-decorated cake orders and  8-12 months notice on wedding cakes (May, June, and October, especially!) is needed.  Please know that we are both stressed and sad when we have to tell our customers that we cannot make their cakes!  However, most importantly we want to guarantee that the quality of what we do for each and every order is what we are known for!  This means that we must set a limit of how many orders that can realistically happen on one day.

If you have an event coming up that you know you are going to want a cake for, PLEASE come on in and see us about it!  It is never too early to place an order.  If you place a deposit to reserve your cake, but have to later cancel, that is fine.  We will let you use your deposit toward another cake order with us.  We do schedule appointments seven days a week to discuss custom cakes, so let us know what we can do to help you with that special cake order this year.  The BEST times to schedule appointments with us are Monday-Friday from 9am to noon….as the shop is quiet and peaceful then.  However, we will be happy to chat with you whenever you are in.  A warning…weekends are the busiest times for us in the cafe.  If at all possible, try to visit us for custom cake orders during the week!

Another great way to get help with custom cake orders is by way of email!  If you will kindly include your telephone number with your email, we will have that in case we need to try and reach you by phone to chat about your message.

That said, we are ALWAYS able to help with last-minute dessert needs by way of our classic 9” round Southern Layer cakes!  We try to keep all of our flavors available daily…so just drop by or give us a call to reserve yours when you need dessert!
